Sing, Nightingale, Sing! contains a wonderful CD of birdcalls. Some of the tracks are accompanied by music which makes for a nice interlude. We are learning to recognize different bird calls from the CD. I highly recommend it if you cannot identify birds by their calls. The book does seem like a package for the CD. It was nice to read it but the illustrations of the birds are a bit abstract. Citcat enjoys listening closely to different sounds. We also purchased a CD of individual musical insturments. Citcat can now identify quite a few musical instruments because of the CD. I love it when we listen to classical music and she shouts out "the flutes are talking to the violins". I attribute it all to this CD.
Here is one more resource to encourage listening. The Listening Walk describes a quiet walk taken by father, daughter and her dog. The little girl starts out by saying "I like to take walks...I keep still and listen." The girl is walking outdoors listening for different sounds. This is such a lovely habit to instill in children and would help with nature walks. I reread the book to Citcat this afternoon and loved it even more in the hush of the late afternoon. I really focused on reading the "sounds". The illustrations compliment the book nicely.
